School Site Council (SSC) - Title I
School Site Council (SSC) - Title 1
-
The California Education Code 52852 outlines the establishment of a School Site Council (SSC) at schools that participate in Title I or LCFF supplemental/concentration grant funding. The SSC plays a crucial role in the decision-making process related to improving student achievement, making it an important avenue for parent and community involvement in school governance.
-
Serving on the School Site Council offers members a chance to:
- Participate in Important Decision-Making: Members can influence decisions that can bring positive benefits to students.
- Represent the School Community: SSC members represent the entire school community and participate in the evaluation of the academic achievement of all students.
- Learn About School Governance and Funding: Members gain a deeper understanding of how schools are governed and how funding, such as Title I or LCFF grants, is used.
-
Parents can become involved in the School Site Council through the following actions:
- Attend SSC Meetings: Parents can ask the principal for meeting dates. These meetings are open to the public, and agendas are posted 72 hours in advance.
- Express Interest to the Principal: If a parent is interested in participating, they should notify the school principal.
- Understand the Team Composition: The School Site Council is made up of the school principal, teachers, other staff, and parents/community members. In high schools, students also participate on the council.
- Election Process: The SSC members are elected within their respective groups—teachers elect teachers, parents elect parents, and students elect students. The elections are held in August/September of each school year.
- Review and Develop the SPSA: The council reviews student data, identifies areas for improvement, and helps create/revise the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), which serves as the school’s action plan for improving achievement.
- Monitor and Evaluate: The SSC monitors and evaluates the implementation of the SPSA and the use of funding, ensuring that goals are being met and funds are being properly spent.
